The visually impaired can quite easily be deterred from exploring tertiary studies when their sense of sight leaves it difficult to absorb college and university lessons. The Note-Taker strives to improve the experience of the nearly blind with a hi-tech system to help them see.

David Hayden and Liqing Zhou worked together to design a video camera and touchscreen tablet combo that can record lectures in realtime. The invention allows a user seated at the back of the classroom to see the whole scene with the teacher, the whiteboard and the PowerPoint presentation just a few inches in front of his eyes on the screen of his zoom-enabled laptop. The standing camcorder employs autofocus as it pans and tilts to capture an optimal view. The Note-Taker’s footage is played in one window of the monitor, while the user can take notes with a stylus in an adjacent window.
