The Toyota Prius C will be known in Japan by the name Aqua when it launches there in January 2012. The compact hybrid is expected to launch sometime in the same year in the US. The Aqua will sport a starting price of 1.7 million yen (around $22,236). That price is roughly 300,000 yen cheaper than the 2011 Prius.

To keep the price of the car in check, the company will reportedly launch the vehicle with a 1.8-liter gas engine.

It is expected that the company will offer a similar discount when the compact gas-electric arrives in the States, and here most probably it will still be called the Prius C. The company says that $20,000 is their preliminary price target in the US.

A report suggests that the Prius C is expected to carry a fuel economy rating of 40 km/l (94 mpg US) on Japan’s JC08 evaluation cycle. That is roughly equal to an EPA combined rating of 61 mpg US.

Just to let you know, the 2011 Toyota Prius is rated at 32 km/l (76.7 mpg US) on Japan’s JC08 test cycle. In the US, it is rated at 51 mpg in the city and 48 mpg on the highway.
